Part 2 of the Sugar Babies diabetes mini-series examines the rising rates of type 1 diabetes. Ann Marie is the mother of 11-year-old Gus, who was diagnosed at age 7. Shortly after her son’s diagnosis she realizes there are several newly diagnosed kids in her own neighborhood of Weston, Massachusetts, and she begins to take note. Within eleven months, seven children have been diagnosed in a 2-mile radius. She knows it has to be investigated. She takes these cases to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and helps launch the first-ever cluster investigation of type 1 diabetes. The number of diagnoses has now risen to an astonishing twenty-one. SUGAR BABIES follows the development of this story that may suggest an environmental cause.
